On February 24, the Ukrainian Canadian community on Vancouver’s Westside will mark four years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine with a screening of a documentary by celebrated filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky and a candlelight vigil featuring live music and words of remembrance.

The evening of commemoration – February 24 Screening + Candlelight Vigil: An Evening to Remember – will begin at 5:00 PM in the Performance Theatre in the AMS Nest at the University of British Columbia with a screening of Children in the Fire, a powerful documentary about the impact of the war on Ukrainian children from the director of Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom (the latter of which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2016). In Children in the Fire, war-wounded Ukrainian children share their stories through a blend of live footage and animation, bringing their experiences to life. Watch the trailer here or below.

The screening will be followed by a candlelight vigil, which will take place directly outside of the UBC Bookstore and feature a soul-stirring performance by Ukrainian Canadian vocalist Olesia Shewchuk, Ukrainian poetry, and a moment of silence to honour Ukrainians lost in the war. The vigil will also include an “open mic” for those attendees who wish to share their war stories and hopes for the future.
